DARWIN The Mission

DARWIN
Darwin is a flotilla of four free-flying spacecraft, each containing a 3 metre diameter infrared telescope. They will search for signs of life on Earth-like planets. This will require a number of technological innovations before the mission launches in the middle of the next decade. Its mission objectives are:

  • to detect and analyse Earth-like worlds
  • to detect atmospheres on these planets and to search for gases that can indicate life
  • to solve the technological challenges of far infrared interferometric imaging in space
